This book contains a first translation of a chapter from Papillon's Traité Historique et Pratique de la Gravure en Bois, published in 1766, entitled Instructions on how to print woodcuts properly. There is also an Appendix giving a brief survey of English-speaking commentators about whether Papillon was wood engraving – as it is now defined using endgrain wood – or woodcutting.
